Repairing concrete around a handrail post in Coronado.

AWC company project in Coronado.

Concrete had blown out around a metal post base at an elevated walkway. The completed-work record describes a localized repair that prepared both the exposed post base and the surrounding concrete before rebuilding the missing area and sealing the repaired interfaces.

Repair stage: the rebuilt concrete follows the surrounding contour; tools and edge protection remain in place.

The repair began with the loose concrete and exposed post base

AWC inspected the affected section and surrounding area, then removed loose or unstable concrete from the localized blowout. The exposed metal post base and the surrounding concrete were cleaned so the repair could address the two surfaces that meet at this location. The project record identifies rust swelling at post bases as an observed contributor at this site.

Each surface received its own preparation

The cleaned metal post base received anti-corrosion primer. The cleaned concrete repair area received concrete bonding primer before the patch material was placed. Separating those preparation steps is useful because the post and surrounding concrete have different roles in the repair. For a similar repair, the written scope should identify the preparation for each exposed surface before the patch covers it.

The patch was shaped to the existing contours

AWC filled the blowout with new concrete and shaped the repair to follow the existing contours. The finish was brought as close as practical to the surrounding color, with the record acknowledging that some visibility could remain. This sets a more useful finish expectation than calling the repair invisible. A future proposal at a similar interface should identify the removal limit, planned contour, visible finish expectation, adjacent surfaces that remain and the approval point if removal exposes a larger condition.

The repaired area and post interface were sealed

Polyurethane sealant was applied at the repaired area and between the handrail post base and the concrete inlay. The record describes this sealing as a step intended to help slow future blowouts at the observed interface, not as a permanent prevention guarantee. That distinction matters at a metal-to-concrete transition exposed to weather. The worksite was then cleaned and debris and excess materials were removed.

The customer lesson is repair plus observation

This localized repair combined removal, metal preparation, concrete preparation, shaped patching, finish work and sealant at the interface. Ongoing observation remains appropriate because the record does not claim that broader rust activity, water exposure, concealed conditions or every post base was corrected. A useful closeout should identify the exact repaired location, visible finish, sealed interfaces, remaining observations and the contact for a change noticed later.
